Chandrika’s Soulful Escape to Shimla with Thrillophilia

"We sought an escape from the chaos of life and found ourselves in the quiet poetry of snow-covered mountains and timeless charm."
Life as a software engineer often feels like being stuck in a loop — long hours, endless deadlines, and little time to pause. My partner and I, weary of this routine, decided to do something impulsive. We booked a Himachal trip through Thrillophilia without much planning, hoping for a breather from city life.
What we didn’t expect was that this trip would become a collection of moments so meaningful, they’d feel like a treasure trove of memories.
From Chaos to Calm
Our journey started in Delhi, where we left the bustling cityscape behind and embraced the winding roads of Himachal Pradesh. With every turn, the air grew crisper, the views more enchanting.

Over the course of our trip, we explored Manali, Solang Valley, Kasol, and finally, Shimla. Each destination had its charm, but Shimla was the star of the show, leaving a permanent mark on our hearts.
Arriving in Shimla felt like stepping into another world. The town’s serenity was almost surreal, a stark contrast to the noise of urban life. Our first evening was spent meandering through Mall Road, a bustling yet charming stretch brimming with life. Vibrant stalls, the scent of roasted peanuts, and the cheerful chatter of locals and tourists filled the air. It felt as though Shimla was gently welcoming us into its fold.
The next day, we ventured to Kufri, about 16 kilometres from Shimla. The journey there was a prelude to the magic that awaited. As the car navigated the twisting roads, we were greeted by snow-covered valleys and towering pine trees, the kind of scenery that belongs on postcards.

Kufri blanketed in pristine white snow, felt like a winter wonderland brought to life. We wasted no time in trying our hand at snowboarding — an experience that was equal parts thrilling and humbling. Gliding down the slopes, surrounded by the silence of the mountains, was a rush of pure joy.
We also visited the Himalayan Mini Zoo, where the sight of the majestic Himalayan Monal and elusive snow leopards left us awestruck. But Kufri wasn’t just about adventure or wildlife; it was about stillness, the kind that seeps into your soul and reminds you of life’s simple beauty.
The Timeless Charms of Shimla
Back in Shimla, we decided to take things slow. A morning stroll along The Ridge, with its sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, was the perfect start. The Christ Church stood tall and timeless, its Gothic architecture a reminder of Shimla’s colonial past. There was something profoundly calming about sitting on a bench here, watching life unfold at a leisurely pace.

Lakkar Bazaar, a treasure trove of wooden handicrafts and woollen goods, was another highlight. We picked up a few souvenirs, but what truly stayed with us were the conversations with the local shopkeepers.
They spoke of Shimla’s history, its changing seasons, and their lives in the hills. These stories added a layer of depth to our experience, making us feel like more than just visitors.
A Culinary Love Affair
The food in Shimla was a revelation. Every bite seemed to carry the essence of the mountains. We indulged in steaming momos, crispy pakoras, and spicy chaat from street vendors, savouring each dish against the backdrop of chilly air.
We also ventured into Himachali cuisine, sampling delicacies like Siddu and Chana Madra. The rich, earthy flavours told tales of tradition and hospitality, offering a glimpse into the region’s culinary heritage.

One evening, we stumbled upon a café tucked away in a quiet corner. Its warm apple pie and freshly brewed coffee turned an ordinary moment into a cherished memory.
Beyond Shimla
While Shimla was the highlight, the journey wouldn’t have been complete without the other destinations. Manali’s towering deodars and snow-capped peaks were awe-inspiring, while the Hadimba Devi Temple exuded an aura of tranquillity. Nestled amidst ancient trees, the temple seemed like a portal to another time, encouraging moments of reflection.
Manikaran’s hot springs were a surreal experience, their warmth washing away every trace of fatigue. Meanwhile, Kasol, with its vibrant culture and laid-back vibe, offered a unique contrast to the serenity of Shimla.
Known as "Mini Israel," it was a fusion of flavours, aromas, and stories that made it a destination in its own right.

Shimla’s Lasting Magic
Shimla wasn’t just a place; it was an experience that left us deeply changed. The town’s quiet charm, the warmth of its people, and the breathtaking beauty of its landscapes came together to create a symphony of emotions.
If you’re planning a trip to Shimla, my advice is to slow down and let the town reveal itself to you. Wander through its bustling markets, savour the local delicacies, and lose yourself in its snow-draped beauty. Don’t miss the thrill of snowboarding in Kufri, the panoramic views from The Ridge, or the stories hidden in Lakkar Bazaar’s nooks and crannies.
For an added touch of adventure, extend your trip to include Manali, Kasol, or Manikaran. Each of these destinations complements Shimla’s charm, offering a well-rounded experience of Himachal’s diverse beauty.

But most importantly, take the time to pause. Breathe in the crisp mountain air, savour the warmth of a chai cup, and let the little moments remind you of life’s simple joys.
