Vinay’s Magical Trip to Kerala with Thrillophilia
It was one of those days when you want to do something but it becomes difficult to figure out what you're seeking. My partner once told me to start browsing through travel blogs whenever I felt that way.
That's how I realized that it was travelling that I was craving. "She seems to know me better than I know myself," I thought to myself. After all, she was herself an avid traveller, so who else could've known what to do in such a scenario?
I had been to the mountains too many times and I really wanted to explore a new destination this time. Trying to find a new place, we browsed through several travel blogs online, and there it was - the perfect destination for our next adventure.
Echoes of Wonder
On our way to Munnar, our driver for the trip made a stop along the National Highway. "I thought it'd be a great idea for you to see the waterfalls, tourists specially request a small stop here" our driver suggested.
Soon I could see why, as Kerala flaunted its beauty with two of its most iconic waterfalls - Valara and Cheeyappara Falls. My partner was taken aback by how the water was cascading from a height of around 1,000 feet, throwing mist all around. "I'm so glad that you made the stop! I'd request you to never hold back such wonderful ideas," I replied.
After clicking some beautiful pictures with the backdrop of the majestic waterfalls, we continued our journey to Munnar. Once we reached our hotel, we threw our luggage and immediately stepped outside for a leisurely walk around the area. We hadn't even begun our sightseeing tour yet and we were already getting excited about the treasures Kerala held for us.
The next day, we began our sightseeing tour with a visit to the chocolate factory. My partner is the biggest chocolate lover that I know in the world, and I had specially included it in our itinerary. Her happiness knew no bounds the moment we reached there, and within a few minutes of the tour, we found ourselves learning the art of making chocolates. She especially loved how they allowed us to take home some of the chocolates that we made ourselves at the workshop.
Up next was a place that held a special place in my heart - the Ripples ‘Chai Bazaar’. Being an avid tea lover, I loved exploring a wide range of top-quality tea specimens, including long leaves and a variety of flavours. My partner also found some other items such as coffee and ayurvedic oils at the bazaar.
Later, we also visited the Echo Point on the outskirts of Munnar, near Mattupetty Dam. "Look at the views of the lush green tea plantations and the lake...and the mountains!" my partner exclaimed.
Into Nature's Embrace
It was then time for us to visit one of the most popular wildlife parks in the region - Periyar National Park. We had opted for a boat tour across the region, as we wanted to explore at a comfortable pace. Even after having visited multiple sites in Kerala, the lush greenery still had us both in awe.
As our boat tour began along the Periyar Lake, Kerala's landscape unfolded itself in front of our eyes. The lush green mountains, the shining waters of the lake, and the dense forest along the shore looked like something out of a fairytale. As we glided, we could spot a variety of animals now and then - from deer, and elephants, to several birds that I had never seen before.
Boating in Periyar helped us develop a fresh perspective of the region's beauty and a chance to connect with the peaceful ambiance of nature.
Later during the day, we also visited the local markets near the wildlife park, from where we bought various types of aromatic spices, banana chips, and karipap (a type of pastry).
Drifting Through Alleppey
Spending time on a houseboat in Alleppey, which according to our guide, also goes by the name "Venice of the East," was a special experience. As we hopped into a traditional Kerala houseboat, the crew welcomed us with warm smiles. “You’re in for a treat,” one of the houseboat staff members said, pointing at the lush green paddy fields that lay ahead.
As the houseboat gently glided along the calm backwaters, we admired the several villages and swaying palm trees that dotted the coastline. The rhythmic sound of the gentle waves parting through the hull made for a peaceful ambience.
“Look at those fishermen!” my partner exclaimed, pointing to a group of locals casting nets for fishing nearby.
Later, we enjoyed a lip-smacking traditional Kerala meal prepared on board, including fresh catch cooked with exotic local spices. “This is the best fish delicacy that I've ever had!” I declared, savouring each bite of it. As the sun began to set, the sky changed into a canvas of vibrant colours, reflecting upon the calm waters of Alleppey.
“I really wish we never left this houseboat,” my partner whispered as night fell, with the chorus of crickets and the gentle rustle of leaves in the background.
