Some trips are remembered for a particular attraction. Others are remembered for everything that happens along the way. For Nikhil Bidwai and Pankaja, their five-day journey through Sikkim and Darjeeling belonged firmly in the second way. The itinerary included familiar names like Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Namchi, and Darjeeling. Yet when they looked back on the trip later, it was not just the destinations that stood out. It was the mountain roads connecting them, the constantly changing weather, and the feeling that every turn revealed something different.

The trip began in Siliguri and ended in Gangtok. Anyone who has travelled through the Eastern Himalayas knows that the journey itself is part of the experience. The roads twist through valleys, climb steadily into the hills, and occasionally reveal viewpoints that make people instinctively reach for their phones. Somewhere along the route, Nikhil and Pankaja noticed a small tea stall overlooking the mountains. It was not marked on any itinerary, and nobody had recommended it. Yet they ended up stopping there for a short break, watching clouds drift across the hills while a kettle whistled in the background.

Gangtok itself offered a slower pace after the long drive. There was no pressure to rush into sightseeing immediately. Instead, they spent the evening settling into the rhythm of the hills. Mountain destinations often have a way of doing that. Plans become less important, conversations become longer, and somehow even simple walks feel more memorable than expected.

A Day Above the Clouds at Tsomgo Lake

The visit to Tsomgo Lake the following day felt completely different. The higher they travelled, the colder the air became. The landscape changed every few kilometres, and the mountains seemed to disappear and reappear depending on where the clouds settled. Tsomgo Lake itself looked almost different from one side to the other. Parts of the water reflected the sky while other sections remained hidden beneath drifting mist.

They spent more time taking in the scenery than trying to capture it. A cloud rolled across the lake and changed the entire backdrop anyway. The scene drew plenty of laughter from everyone nearby. It was a reminder that in the mountains, nature usually gets the final say.

Baba Mandir added a completely different mood to the day. The place felt quieter and more reflective than many of the other stops on the route. Visitors arrived curious about the stories associated with the site and often stayed longer than expected. The mountains provided the backdrop, but the conversations taking place around the temple seemed just as important.

The Slow Journey to Darjeeling

The drive from Gangtok to Darjeeling via Namchi shifted the pace once again. The roads wound through hillsides lined with greenery, while small settlements appeared unexpectedly around bends before disappearing behind the next ridge. Unlike larger city holidays, where every hour feels scheduled, this part of the trip unfolded more slowly. Sometimes the best views appeared when nobody was actively looking for them.

Darjeeling brought a different kind of energy. The streets felt livelier, cafés stayed busy throughout the day, and travellers wandered through the town without seeming in much of a hurry. Their Darjeeling sightseeing tour began before sunrise with a drive to Tiger Hill. Despite the early hour, the viewpoint was already filled with visitors waiting for the first glimpse of Kanchenjunga. Nikhil and Pankaja watched as the darkness slowly gave way to morning light, revealing the snow-capped peaks in the distance. The mood shifted almost instantly once the mountains became visible, with cameras coming out and conversations turning into excited chatter about the view.

Later, they visited Batasia Loop, where the famous toy train tracks curve around landscaped gardens and a war memorial. The stop offered sweeping views of the surrounding hills, and many visitors spent their time moving between viewpoints and photo spots. The sightseeing tour ended at Ghoom Monastery, where fluttering prayer flags and the towering statue of Maitreya Buddha created a much calmer atmosphere. After a morning spent chasing mountain views, the monastery offered a quieter side of Darjeeling and a chance to slow down before heading back.

Why Did Nikhil & Pankaja Choose Thrillophilia For Their Sikkim Trip?

While the destinations left an impression, Nikhil's review also highlighted the planning and support that went into the journey. Sikkim is not the kind of destination where travellers spend most of their time in one place.

For this trip, Thrillophilia arranged stays at Divine Grace and Divine Himalayan Resort, coordinated all transfers, and ensured that knowledgeable local guides accompanied the sightseeing places.

Sikkim's terrain is very different from what many travellers are used to. The roads are winding, weather conditions can change quickly, and several routes pass through high-altitude mountain stretches. Keeping that in mind, the team ensured that Nikhil travelled with an experienced local driver who was familiar with the region and its routes. It was one less thing to worry about and allowed them to simply enjoy the journey as the landscape unfolded outside the window.

"Our experience with the Thrillophilia team was fabulous. Everything was planned as per the itinerary. Staying at Divine Grace and Divine Himalayan Resort was good, and the cab driver's service was excellent. The team went above and beyond to make our trip seamless. Our guide in all locations was incredibly knowledgeable and made the experience unforgettable. Thanks to Thrillophilia and Team." Nikhil reviewd his Sikkim trip with Thrillophilia on TripAdvisor.

For travellers planning a Sikkim getaway, that kind of support often matters more than people realise. The mountains will take care of the views. Having the right team handle everything else simply makes it easier to enjoy them.
