Chasing the Northern Lights: Sushant’s Journey Through Norway with Thrillophilia

It all started with a childhood dream.
As a kid, I had once seen a documentary on Norway - the tall fjords, the charming streets of Bergen, and, of course, the ethereal dance of the Northern Lights. I remember sitting cross-legged in front of the TV, completely mesmerised, promising myself that one day, I would see it all with my own eyes.
Years passed, and that dream got buried under work, responsibilities, and the routine of everyday life. But one evening, as my wife and I sat by the window with cups of steaming chai, watching the rain paint patterns on the glass, she suddenly asked, “If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?”

Without hesitation, I replied, “Norway.”
She looked at me, surprised but intrigued. “Then why haven’t we gone yet?”
That was it. That was all the push we needed. Within a week, flights were booked, itineraries planned with Thrillophilia, and our hearts were set on a journey that would turn a childhood dream into reality.
Our First Step into the Beautiful City of Oslo

The moment we landed in Oslo, I felt an immediate connection to the place. The fresh air, the modern yet historic charm of the city, and the sheer cleanliness were enough to make us fall in love at first sight.
Our first day was all about wandering around the city. We visited Vigeland Park where we got a chance to see a variety of intricate sculptures. At the Viking Ship Museum, I was transported back in time, standing before the ancient ships that had once sailed these very waters.
The next day, with our Oslo Pass activated, we explored at our own pace. The freedom to hop on and off public transport, visit as many museums as we wanted, and even enjoy discounts at some of the best eateries in the city made the experience even better.
A Journey Through Fairyland

On our third day, we went on what was perhaps one of the most scenic journeys of our lives - a Norway tour. We boarded the train from Oslo to Myrdal, and the landscape outside our window changed dramatically as we moved. Rolling hills gave way to tall snow-covered peaks, and every twist and turn revealed a view that seemed straight out of a painting.

From Myrdal, we hopped onto the famous Flam Railway, which is one of the steepest standard gauge railways in the world. I could barely contain my excitement as we passed roaring waterfalls, deep ravines, and tiny villages situated in the valleys below. The experience felt otherworldly as if we were moving through the scenes of a fairy tale.

In Flam, we boarded a fjord cruise that took us through the stunning Nærøyfjord. The silence of the fjord, interrupted only by the occasional call of a seagull or the gentle splash of water against the boat, was deeply calming.
We reached Bergen that evening, and despite the long journey, we were not tired. If anything, our hearts were fuller.
Bergen is the City of Colours and Fjords

Bergen welcomed us with its postcard-perfect beauty, where colourful houses lined the waterfront and surrounded by tall mountains. It felt cosy, almost like a town from a storybook.
The next morning, we travelled on a fjord cruise to Mostraumen. As we sailed through the grand Osterfjord, I felt a deep sense of peace. The highlight of the cruise was when the boat went close to a waterfall, we felt the icy mist on our faces.
Later, we wandered through Bryggen and explored its charming alleys and shops. We stopped by a café for some freshly baked cinnamon buns and coffee while soaking in the quiet charm of Bergen.
The Time Finally Arrives!

As we flew to Tromsø, the anticipation was almost unbearable. This was what we had been waiting for - the Northern Lights.
Our first day in Tromsø was spent at a reindeer camp, where we not only got to feed and interact with these beautiful creatures but also learned about the indigenous Sami culture. Sitting around a warm fire and listening to the Sami people share their traditions and songs was an experience I never expected to be so deeply moving.

That evening, we set out on a minibus tour to chase the elusive Aurora Borealis. The bus drove us far away from the city lights into the Arctic wilderness. The sky was dark, the air biting cold, and we stood there, waiting.
And then, it finally happened.
A faint green glow appeared on the horizon, growing stronger by the second. Suddenly, the entire sky exploded into waves of green, purple, and blue, dancing and shifting like a celestial symphony.
My wife clutched my arm as her eyes were wide with disbelief.

“This… this is unreal,” she whispered.
I did not even reach for my camera at first because I just wanted to take it all in. It felt like the universe was putting on a private show just for us. This journey was a reminder that some dreams, no matter how long they’re put on hold, can still come true with the right push. We left Norway with our hearts full, knowing we’d carry the magic of the Northern Lights with us forever.
